Jamil Hood Jr. is off to an explosive start this season. Leading Green Tech to a 10-1 record, Hood has made the Eagles a competitive team in just the third year of the program’s history. They rank 22nd in the most recent state class AA polls and there is no reason to believe that this team will be slowing down anytime soon under his leadership.
After 11 games, Hood is averaging around 19 points, eight assists, three steals, and five rebounds per game. The junior guard is expected to be a “floor leader, get others involved first, limit turnovers,” according to his father Jamil Hood, Sr., who is also the coach of the Green Tech Eagles. His father also noted that in order for the team, and the players individually, to progress and avenge a first round exit in last season’s sectionals, they have to get better each day.
At 6’2”, Hood has the ability to attack the rim and the athleticism to dunk over defenders. He is a “fearless player…dunks on defenders, creates for himself, (is an) efficient free throw shooter” according to his father/coach. The aspect of his game that may separate him from the rest of the high school players is his attention to detail on the defensive end, due to his ability to be a “tough” on-the-ball defender. He possesses leadership qualities that his team members “look for…and (his) knack for hustle and energy,” are something on which Green Tech thrives.
Outside of the gym, Jamil, Jr. is also seeing success. He is a solid student and knows that hard work off the court is important, as well. Hood has put in many hours during the off- season, both individually and for his AAU team the Albany City Rocks, trying to improve his overall game and conditioning.
Jamil, Jr. is seeing a lot of attention about playing at the next level. According to his father, he has received interest from UNC Wilmington, UAlbany, Boston University, and several D-2 schools. Wherever Hood ends up playing at the college level, he will be an impact player, both on and off the court. We at Upstate Scout would like to thank Jamil Hood, Sr. for his time and wish Green Tech and Jamil, Jr. the best of luck the remainder of the season.
