While the rising seniors that will be going into the school year in September with college basketball on their minds are certainly worth noting, the 2015 class in New York State (next year’s juniors) are just as loaded and they still have two full years left of college ball to increase their ability.
Between the city area and upstate New York, the Class of 2015 is filled with players who are drawing attention from schools nationwide. In fact there are 17 players from New York listed in MaxPreps.com’s list of Class of 2015 watch list.
In the upstate area, players to watch include Thomas Bryant out of Bishop Kearney in Rochester who is rated as one of the top prospects in the country. Bryant has an overall scout grade of 94, and at 6’8’’ 225, has explosive athletic abilities and is in fact still growing. Bryant can handle the ball like a guard and attacks the basket with explosiveness. He can also knock down the perimeter jumper and passes extremely well.
Joining Bryant among the non-city elite of the Class of 2015 is Cheick Diallo out of Centerreach New York. Diallo plays his high school ball for Our Savior New America high school, and the 6’9’’ junior has garnered interest from such schools as Arizona, Iowa State, Kansas, Kentucky and Rutgers.
Bryant and Diallo may be the top 2015 prospects out of Upstate New York, but he is certainly not alone. Joining him on the watch list is Section Two’s own Joel Wincowski, a 6’2’’ PG out of Class C Lake George. Wincowski has been tearing it up at the high school level and led his team to a state championship this season.
Jessie Govan is another potential Division One player out of Manhasset, New York and St. Mary’s high school. The 6’10’’ big man has dominated in the paint and has tremendous athleticism and a good touch in the paint. Don’t be surprised to see Govan end up with a major college program when his recruiting is completed.
Representing Long Island is Tavon Ginyard a 5’9’’ point guard from St. John the Baptist who is an excellent ball handler and has great touch from long range. Ginyard has gained interest from several mid-major Division One schools already.
Kai Mitchell from Spring Valley also makes the list, and with his big body and knack for rebounding and scoring inside, his stock should rise even higher in his junior season.
Jalen Poyser of Findlay Prep, Aaron Ray of Middletown, as well as eight New York City players crack the list of players to watch for 2015 on MaxPreps, but that only scratches the surface of what this loaded class has to offer in New York state. Check out our next monthly newsletter to find even more talent from the class of 2015 at the Division one, two, and three levels.
