With so many basketball players in Upstate New York, it easy to see how many of them stay under the radar. One of these prospects is CJ Burke, a 6’4” guard/forward who attends New Paltz High School. When evaluating prospects most coaches are looking for a kid that offer a unique skill set and someone they won’t have to follow to class. He is exactly that.
CJ is a special kind of player. At 6’4”, he has guard skills and range out to the three point line. While he does pose as a match up problem, that is not what will get him to the next level and possibly a scholarship. What sets him apart from other players in the state is his ability to do just about everything on the court. Whether it’s making the right pass or grabbing a crucial rebound, CJ can do it.
In the classroom, CJ also excels. He boost a 3.7 GPA while taking a tough course load that includes a number of AP Classes. As for most athletes with good grades, this can make his recruitment much easier and a lot more broad.
At the next level CJ should be able to play at the off-guard and small forward positions because of his surprising athleticism. This will allow to him to guard players that may seem quicker and bang down low against those who are stronger. Whatever position he does play, he will be able to contribute in a number of ways such as grabbing rebounds, racking up assist, or spotting up and hitting the open shot.
College coaches should keep an eye on him over the next couple months as he continues to improve at a rapid rate and develop physically. This live period will be crucial for him as he plays with the Capital City Lighting. He will be competing against some of the best players on the east coast while trying to prove that he is just as good on the court as he is in the classroom.
