Juston Johnson, a rising sophomore at Buffalo’s Bishop Timon – St. Jude High School, is on the verge of breaking out. The 5’11, 150 lb. guard, who is running with the Albany City Rocks (15U EYBL) and Upstate Basketball Club this summer, was a standout in his second season at the varsity level (first at Timon).
Johnson averaged 8 points, 4 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 2 steals per game this past season. These stats attest to the fact that Johnson is extremely versatile and plays hard on both ends of the court. Johnson brings to the court a variety of skills. He is a multi-dimensional scorer and is adept at finishing through contact at the rim. He’s capable of making Kyrie Irving-esque layups each time he attacks the paint. He shoots the ball well and is an above-average defender, too.
This offseason, Johnson devoted a great deal of time to improving his skills. He works out with his coach and/or trainer almost every day, in both the weight room and on the court. That hard work is paying off, as Johnson recently drew interest from nearby Buffalo *college? U. Buffalo/Buffalo State, etc.?. That list should grow with time.
Johnson is determined to make himself known this upcoming season. He wants to go undefeated at home to reward loyal fans- and win a state championship. These are lofty goals, but not in his eyes. He’s ready and willing to do whatever it’ll take to get there. Johnson has a 90 classroom average and is on the honor roll. In addition, he is a starting wide receiver for Timon’s varsity football team and a member of the spring track team.
I had the chance to ask Juston a few questions of my own:
Q: What do you believe are your best skills as a basketball player?
A: I think my best skills are my ability to score in a variety of ways, play great defense, and always being able to play with composure.
Q: What impact do you feel you would bring to a college team?
A: I think I can be a floor general that controls the game on both sides of the court. I can also score whenever the team needs me to.
Q: Every kid who plays basketball thinks they’re good. What do you think you are?
A: I think I’m a good player, too, because the key to success is being confident, but not cocky. I think I’m a good player, but one that still has a lot of work left to do.
Q: What is your ultimate goal, with respect to the game of basketball?
A: I want to make it to college and be able to get my education for free. I want to play in the NBA, too, but I don’t just want to be in the league. I want to be a great player and win a lot.
