Andre Smith, a senior at Bishop Maginn High School, is breaking out and establishing himself as a premier scorer in Section II. The 6’1, 163 lb. guard, who ran with the Albany City Rocks this summer, is doing it all for the Griffins in his first year on the varsity squad.

Smith is a tough guard with excellent ball-handling skills. He epenetratesthe teeth of the defense and finishes well in traffic. He plays hard on both ends of the court and is a strong defender. He’s a capable jump shooter, and makes it a point to get his teammates involved. He is a high IQ player, too, and is a winner. He’s led Bishop Maginn to an 11-4 mark (10-0 in conference). In guiding his team to an undefeated record in league play, Smith is averaging 28.6 points, seven rebounds and eight assists per game. Versatility at its finest! His numbers have caught the attention of many in the basketball world, including schools like U Albany, Siena and even the University of Maryland.

Smith expects more institutions to get involved in the process. He is deciding whether or not to reclassify into the 2018 class and attend prep school. Nonetheless, he’s a confident player and feels he will make any program happy. Smith is an exceptional student and has a 3.7 GPA.

I had the chance to ask Andre a few questions, as well:

Q: Did you set any personal goals for yourself this season?

A: I want to play to my full potential whether it’s scoring, passing, assisting, etc. In the end, I just want to win in sectionals. I’m currently averaging 28 PPG, but I’m always looking to better myself. I’m shooting for 30+ and a perfect finish to my season.

Q: What do you do during the offseason to improve your skills?

A: I’m in the gym every morning at 6 am, getting about 200 shots up. I’m in the weight room, as well. I also spend a lot of time in the gym with my younger brother. He’s in the eighth grade, so he’s still raw, but I’m doing what I can to help him get better.

Q: What are some things you like to do outside of basketball?

A: Outside of basketball, I like to go to the mall, shop or play video games with friends.

Q: What impact do you feel you would bring to a college team?

A: I think I’d bring a confident winning mentality, leadership, and a go-to scoring option.

Q: Every kid who plays basketball thinks they’re good. What do you think you are?

A: I think I’m the best. Every time I step on the court my mindset is to prove that I’m the best.

Q: What is your ultimate goal, with respect to the game of basketball?

A: To play Division 1 and then play professionally.
