Saturday marks the beginning of the 12th annual King of the Mountain Summer Basketball Classic.    A plethora of venues will play host to the event including Siena College, The College of Saint Rose, Saratoga Rec. Center, and Rensselaer High School.  Over 100 teams broken up into 10 divisions will compete on the boys’ side and 31 teams will play in the girls’ brackets.  Adirondack Hoops commissioner and Tamarac High School girls’ varsity basketball coach Eric Medved has run the King of the Mountain all 12 years of its existence.  He states that the 10th grade boys division (class of 2014) may be the most “intriguing”.  Some of the teams in that division includes the Scotia Tartans, Team 518, Spa Catholic, and Brothers Select.  They are joined by out-of town team such as the Kingston Komets, Vermont Irish Cats, and Sun Youth Montreal.

Strong in area talent is the 11th grade division (class of 2013).  Fresh off their GymRat Challenge run, the New York Dream Team leads the pack of local teams.  Joining in the division from around Upstate New York are the Bethlehem Eagles, Helderberg Thunder, Lake Champlain Lakers, 518-11 Kington Komets, Catskill Basketball Club, and the JC Ballers out of Catholic High which is also the name of boys Varsity Coach Chuck Mack’s intensive off season program.  If you still haven’t seen enough of the class of 2012 in action and would like to catch them one more time before they take their games to the next level, you can watch the 12th grade division square off at Rensselaer High School and Green Tech.

The 2012 King of the Mountain promises to be one for the ages.  As with the GymRat, we will be there perusing the talent in order to bring you the most in-depth coverage around. To those who can’t make it for whatever reason, check back sometime early next week for complete analysis. For those attending this weekend, enjoy!
