Last Thursday marked the opening of the 2012 CDBA Summer League season. The mission of the CDBA, headed by founder and president Dave Van Wormer, is to bring the best basketball players from around the Capital District together to play in one powerhouse league with the goal of providing us with some thrilling basketball action. If the matchups from last Thursday are any indication, the 2012 installment of the CDBA promises to make good on that mission.
The 6:30 game was played between Team Deas and American Energy Care. Team Deas took the contest by the score of 73-60, however, this is not a true indication of just how good this game really was. In a back-and-forth hard-fought matchup, Team Deas was able to get some key plays at crucial times in order to run away and secure the victory. Troy High grad Tiki Mayben led Team Deas, and the whole league that night, in scoring with 28 points. Anthony Armstead led American Energy Care with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Eliezer Lind also contributed 13 boards for American Energy Care.
In the “game of the night”, which happened to be a re-match of last year’s championship game between D & D Power (formerly Shake ‘N Bake) and KeyBank(formerly Somethin’ Nice), a close contest saw KeyBank beating 2011 league champions D & D Power 66-65. For the victors, Ed Palmatier, Jr. led the way with 15 points. Adam McGuire chipped in 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, and Saint Rose big man Dom Milka scored 11 points and grabbed 8 boards in his CBDA debut. Siena’s O.D. Anosike and Davis Martens did their best to try and win the game for D & D power, but on Thursday night their best wasn’t good enough as Anosike managed a mere 14 points while Martens contributed 12 points while securing 9 rebounds.
The last game of the night belonged to Janitronics (formerly Bye Or Dye) and Eric Medved’s NBT Bank squad. In what was Upstate Scouts “game of the week”, Janitronics proved just too seasoned for Medved’s team of teenagers, as they edged NBT 74-73. Roberts Wesleyan senior Devin Grimes scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists for Janitronics, as Brett Barnard added 17 points and Steve Dagostino contributed 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists. NBT showed what it’s capable of as Trahmier Burrell knocked in 16, Evan Hymes scored 15, and Jamel Fields tallied 15 points including a 5 for 5 night from the foul line.
Night two of the CDBA is tonight with the “game of the night” being played at 7:45 pm between Team Deas and SEFCU. SEFCU will be playing their first game of the summer, as Thursday was their bye-week. Upstate Scout’s own “game of the week” will be held on Thursday at 6:30 between American Energy Care and KeyBank. See you tonight at Rensselaer High School!
