Two Pine Plains High School brothers are making a name for themselves out in Section 9.
Tyler and Zach Lydon have led Pine Plains High School to two consecutive Section Nine Class C Championships the last two seasons, bringing the team to back-to-back regional semifinals.
The brothers, one year apart in age, both stand at 6’8’ and tower over their competition in the Mid-Hudson Athletic League. The pair combined to average over 23 points a game and 14 rebounds last season.
Tyler, only a sophomore last season put up staggering numbers scoring 14.5 points a game, to go along with 8.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, which is getting the 6’8 guard some serious Division I looks.
The boys’ father, Tim Lydon says that Virginia Tech, UAB, and James Madison have already contacted Tyler about playing D1 College Basketball.
Lydon says it is his versatility that really impresses scouts who have seen Tyler in action. “Tyler is a 6’8’ kid that can handle the ball and he can shoot three’s. He can play in the paint too. He has a lot of those skills for a big guy that get him a lot of notice”, Tim said in a recent interview.
Zach, who averaged 8.9 points and 6.6 rebounds last season, has also been getting looks from college about continuing his basketball career post Pine Plains. His father says that SUNY Oswego, SUNY Potsdam, Hobart, Hamilton, and Connecticut College are amongst the schools who have contacted him.
Although they play at a small school at Pine Plains, Tim Lydon believes it has not hurt them getting exposure to colleges. “We were worried about that. Tyler played AAU for R.A.P. Memorial squad in Red Hook and got noticed last year by the City Rocks after Tyler’s team but their 15 (and under) Black Team. Basically they recruited him at that point, and once he started playing with those guys, they got him the exposure.”
Both Tyler and Zachary have made the cut for the final 16 players for Section 9’s BCANY squad that will compete against eight other districts in a tournament for state supremacy in the beginning of August in Johnson City. The event took the place of the now defunct Empire State Games. The roster will be cut one more time from 16 to 12 in late July.
For the Lydon brothers however, they are still focused on their remaining time at Pine Plains. “Their goal is to make it to states” said Tim. “Were trying to keep all the guys together and make it to Glens Falls.”
Pine Plains has lost to Tuckahoe in the regionals each of the last two years.
Upstate scouting service would like to extend a thank you to Tim Lydon for answering our questions, and wish Tyler and Zach the best of the luck in their future collegiate careers.
