The 6’5’’ Junior averaged 20.5 points per-game last season as a sophomore for Fayetteville-Manlius, and led them to a 16-4 record. Schurman also boasted an impressive 7.4 rebounds a game, and made 40 three-pointers.
With even more experience under his belt this season, Schurman’s numbers should only go up. Schurman lists his three-point shot, man-to-man defense, leadership, and ability to score as his top assets, and division one schools left and right are taking notice of his talent.
“It’s been fun. It’s been definitely unexpected. A wide range of schools have called. I’ve been on a few visits. It’s been fun,” Schurman said of the recruiting process in a recent interview with Upstate Scouting Service.
He lists Canisius, Cornell, Brown, Lipscomb, Boston U, Bucknell, UAlbany, and Cleveland State as among the schools who have already contacted him showing interest, although he admits he has no clear favorites yet.
At 6’5’’, Schurman is a versatile player who could play multiple positions at the collegiate level. “I don’t really have a position”, he said. “Probably the two, but to be honest I don’t really know. I’m kind of a tweener, but probably the two, maybe the three.”
Schurman says he played in the off-season with the City Rocks , joining them in tournaments throughout the country, including Orlando and New York City. He also says he has been working on his jump shot and scoring off the dribble.
For next season, Schurman’s goals are clear. “As a team we want to win the section.”“Individual goals just kind of take care of themselves, but for the team we definitely want to win the section.”
Upstate Scouting Service thanks John Schurman for answering our questions, and wishes him and Fayetteville-Manlius the best of luck this upcoming season.
